How to Maintain Your Automatic Garage-Door Opener

The automatic garage door opener plays a very important role in the smooth operation of your garage door.

However, since it is always at the center of everything, it is normally exposed to a lot of wear and tear. The good news is that this shouldn’t be a problem if you know the proper ways to do maintenance.

You don’t even need a garage opener service. Some of these things can be done any time at home at very little cost and effort.

The following are a few simple tips to maintain your garage door opener:

Regular Inspection

Some people often make the mistake of assuming that the garage door is just fine. The only time they check is when they encounter an issue and by then it's usually too late.

Do not make that blunder. Most problems with garage doors can be fixed very easily if they are detected early enough. For this reason, regular door inspections will be needed.

And we are not saying you do this every day. But once every two or three months you should have the door inspected for possible damage. This will give you the chance to catch issues early before they evolve into major problems that could lead to high garage door tune-up costs.

Lubrication

As you know, a garage door has a lot of moving parts. These parts need to be fully lubricated for the entire door to function properly.

In most cases, lubrication should be done on a scheduled basis. For instance, depending on how often you use the garage, you can lubricate all moving parts once a week or a month.

Also, pay attention to how the door behaves. If you realize it is starting to make unusual noises when you open or close, then lubrication might be needed.

A garage door that feels harder to open and close may also need to be lubricated. Proper lubrication will extend the life of your garage and its components and it's something easy to do.

Check the Balance

The garage door is supposed to be even across its entire length. However, as time goes by, the doors can sag or lose the initial gradient they had.

In most cases, this process is very gradual and it can be very hard to spot until it's too late. For example, you may notice that your door screeches the surface when you open or close it.

Other times it may not close properly or perhaps you find it very hard to close when you do. This can be signs of an unbalanced garage door and it must be fixed right away. Simply call in a garage door maintenance service and they will know what to do next.

Protect Your Door

Garage doors are very strong and they are built to last for years. But you also need to do your part in protecting them from unnecessary damage.

For instance, in case you are experiencing bad weather in your area, make sure you take measures to protect your door from full exposure.

This can be done through winterization or even applying a cover. Mind your kids as well. Of course, children will enjoy playing around the door but they shouldn’t open and close it for no reason. This simply increases wear and tear unnecessarily.

Consider an Update

There are also a lot of people who stay with a single door for too long. Yes, garage doors are supposed to last for years and if you get proper garage opener installation, it means you will have fewer repairs to deal with.

But no matter what you do, at some point, the door will fall victim to natural wear and tear. Instead of spending your energy and money trying to fix it with repair after repair, it could be time to get an upgrade.

New and modern garage doors are typically easier to handle and they will save you so much time and money in repair and maintenance.
